Beyond the Grades: Why Indonesian Education Needs to Stop Chasing Numbers

Have we ever truly reflected on the question most frequently asked to a child when they step back inside their home after a full day at school? Most of us, by reflex, will immediately throw out cliché prompts such as, "What grade did you get today?" or "Were you able to answer all the exam questions?" Without realizing it, this barrage of seemingly ordinary questions actually mirrors the greatest root problem within our current educational system. We remain trapped in the shackles of a flawed culture—a culture that idolizes numbers on a piece of paper rather than pursuing the deep meaning of the learning process itself. Amid the unstoppable flow of globalization and the exponential leaps of Artificial Intelligence (AI), the global workforce landscape has shifted drastically. Today’s industries are no longer searching for robotic human beings who only excel at memorizing complex mathematical formulas or historical definitions by heart. The world right now is screaming for problem solvers, sharp critical thinkers, and individuals who possess high humanistic empathy. If our educational system stubbornly continues to glorify quantitative grades on exam sheets, it means we are consciously preparing our younger generation to live in the past, rather than to lead in the future.Dismantling the Myth of Standardized IntelligenceIt is time for us to move forward together to shatter the discriminatory myth of the "Smart Child versus the Foolish Child." We must immediately halt the rigid standardization that effortlessly labels a child's capacity based solely on ink marks on a national or semester exam answer sheet. Every child is born into this world as a unique universe, complete with their own constellation of potential. A child who might struggle today with memorizing social theories could very well be a future maestro destined to shake the world through artistic creativity. Similarly, a child who appears slow at arithmetic might harbor extraordinary interpersonal intelligence, capable of mobilizing and leading a massive organization in the future. When we continuously force every fish in the sea to compete in climbing high trees, we are slowly but fatally killing their self-confidence and unique nature. Inclusive, advanced, and progressive education must be capable of seeing, acknowledging, and nurturing the authentic potential within every individual. The noble task of a school is not to act like a factory that prints uniform, rigid workers, but to serve as the ultimate space for polishing gems of different colors so they can shine beautifully in their own unique ways.Balancing the Brain, the Heart, and Real-World ActionDriven by this awareness, our primary focus must immediately shift from passive rote memorization toward building solid character. A balanced, true education must comprehensively touch the three primary domains of humanity: the cognitive domain to sharpen the brain, the affective domain to soften the heart, and the psychomotor domain for agility in concrete action. Unfortunately, in Indonesia, training the brain's capabilities often dominates the school stage so heavily that we frequently forget the heart and character hold the ultimate steering wheel of life. We have never actually lacked smart people in this country; however, the world today is experiencing an acute crisis in the presence of people with moral integrity. Therefore, our educational curriculum must dare to take radical steps toward total transformation to cultivate high curiosity. We must begin teaching children how to ask critical questions, rather than merely dictating how to answer submissively. We must also build mental resilience and true grit, so they understand that a failure in the experimentation process is a valuable stepping stone in learning, not the end of everything. Moving beyond that, education must strengthen social empathy by connecting cold classroom theories with solving real, tangible problems occurring in the surrounding community.A Collaborative Ecosystem to Ignite Lifelong LearningThe massive change we dream of will never materialize if we remain passive and dump the entire heavy burden solely onto the shoulders of schoolteachers. True educational transformation is an ecosystem-wide effort that requires synchronized movements between schools, parents, and all elements of society. As parents at home, let us stop demanding our children to always be number one or win first place in class. Instead, let us learn to appreciate every drop of effort, creativity, and the gritty learning process they navigate. As educators in schools, let us together create liberated classrooms—safe, welcoming spaces where every child's voice and opinion are heard with respect, mistakes in learning are valued as progress toward mature understanding, and interactive, two-way discussions thrive. Ultimately, Indonesia's future will never be determined by how thick the textbooks are that our children rigidly memorize.
